JULY 16th HFA at CORCORAN Corner in DC

We are traveling down to DC this Sunday (July 16th) to install TWO studios at the CORCORAN . Over a six week period various artists will engage with the studios and the public at the corner of NY Ave and 17 th St .

We are also installing another studio at THEARC , and inviting artists to engage w/the community there during the six week project . ALL studios will end up back at THEARC to begin a village project w/ DOUBLE NICKELs Theater group sometime in late August ....

We have several weeks where we will have invited regional artists to engage w/their community whilst we are in DC . We hope some of these artists will want to continue w/the project and sustain the project for a longer term ,

HFA at the CORCORAN GALLERY this SUMMER

We are pleased to announce that we will be installing one of our signature 6 by 6 Studios outside the CORCORAN Gallery in downtown DC this summer. There will be a series of short term artist residencies including artists from the Hudson Valley and NY area , DC and emerging artists and students who will take on various collaborations . We are planning a 6 week run starting around JULY 16th , but final details are still in the works.

We will continue our collaboration w/groups at THEARC during this project and plan to be crossing the river frequently during our time downtown . We hope to be working with students from the Washington Ballet summer camp as well as other groups at THEARC , including ARTREACH students .

We will be hatching various plans to collaborate w/THE DOUBLE NICKELS Theatre Group and Toni Ford during this time , as well as looking at starting their NEW Hybrid Home at THEARC .

APRIL in DC , SECOND WEEK of ARTISTS in RESIDENCE at THEARC

This is the second week of artists in residence at the Studio at THEARC , in DC . MATTHEW SLAATS and MICHAEL NATIELLO are sharing the week and have some things in common and then very different approaches to their work . Matthew has been captivated by GRAFFITTI MOSS and where it might find itself . Working with words that have been left on the Studio by a question and response project WHAT INSPIRES YOU ? Matthew has engaged with spaces that are either less traveled or off the usual path , in this case a series of words on the trees close to the Organic Veg garden . Michael has bought alot of junk mail and other recycled material w/him which he has been blending with other matter on site such as the Cherry blossom , to produce a variety of pulp for paper making . He has also started his day by wandering the neighborhood collecting discarded material for his Mandala assemblages . Both artists activate the space by bringing attention to normal or often unseen or unrealized aspects of the every day world that surrounds us . We look forward to seeing examples of their work at THEARC as the week comes to a close.

FIRST WEEK of the STUDIO at THEARC in DC

This past week was the first official artists in residence week at the Studio at THEARC in DC . Starting off this new project was NY artist CHERE KRAKOVSKY with her piece COMMUNITY KITCHEN TABLE .Each day she set up a round table and invited passers by to stop and chat and to take Tea . She also invited them to engage in various creative activities which were then

diplayed on or in the small Studio . Like the studio's simple shed like structure the kitchen table is both familiar and inviting which encourages any one to sit and talk to the artist on any given subject .

The DC Studio is part of the DCs Arts and Humanities Commission s 5 x5 project which began March 20th . Five curators picked 5 artists to install temporary works around the capitol .HFA is pleased to be an artist project chosen by ecoartspace's curator AMY LIPTON .

Since installing the Studio at THEARC we have had much interest in the project .We originally had a wish for the studio to stay at THEARC and be sustained by a group after we leave April 28th . It appears that wish has come true. TONI FORD , executive director of the DOUBLE NICKELS theatre group has been discussing many ways in which her group could collaborate w/HFA and sustain a structure at THEARC. Plans are afoot to create a hybrid studio at a new location between the garden and the parking lot .

In addition to this hybrid studio we will also leave a small original studio close to the garden and orchard , which will draw attention to this new endeavor of growing food and to a small field that overlooks the creek .

Next week artists MICHAEL NATIELLO and MATTHEW SLAATS will be the artists in residence at the Studio . Blenders will be churning as mixes of moss and pulp get made for a variety of purposes . More on that soon .

STUDIO REFURBISHED FOR DC , March 15th

In and around the Ides of March we thought it a good Idea to sort through a bunch of material that we can bring to DC for the next few weeks , that will be used in all manner of creative ways . We thought that we'd give the studio going down a fresh lick of reclaimed paint , some of it having survived another winter freeze and needed using .... and repurpose a couple of windows and a new found door.

Our wish is that we leave a studio at THEARC to be used by different groups as a continued catalyst for creative activity and discussions . We will see where the prospective participants might want to situate the second studio which will be built the last week of April .

The material that gets repurposed , transformed and in other ways made over during the next few weeks , as well as being exhibited at THEARC in the last week , becomes part of the NEW exterior of the Studio that will stay as 1901 Mississippi Ave .

We look forward to installing the first Studio outside THEARC on Tueday March 20th 2012 .

5 x 5 PUBLIC ART FUND PROJECT in DC

HFA is happy to be a part of this first public art fund project in DC this Spring . Its part of a city wide celebration to mark the Cetennial of the gift to the US of the now familiar Cherry Blossom
Trees . HFA in collaboration with THEARC is setting one of its signature 6 x6 studios outside the entrance to THEARC. We think it'll make a marked visual focus juxtaposing the simple shed like design of our studio with the modern contempary structure of that which is uniquely THEARC .

HFAs focus once there will be to collaborate with the community immediately engaged with THEARC and the larger community of Anacostia . It will be these collaborations that will produce the bulk of the work at the studio and determine the final look of the studio which we hope will reflect its location and community .

Facilitating these individual and group projects will be seven artists who have worked extensively in the public realm in New York , Philadelphia and Portland OR .It is the wish of this group that the studio stay at THEARC and be used in a variety of ways continuing to share the dialog they hope to set up this March and April for a longer period and a larger audience .

PDX HFA WEST GETS ROLLING

Thats Portland OR . ! HFA has gone west . The first HFA Studio on the west coast will get built soon and a site is being secured in Portland for artists to take up working residencies . Artists TODD SARGOOD and E ODIN CATHCART recent west coast transplants are leading this new chapter of HFA . We hope to be able to post a photoshop representation of the new studio very soon as it might appear at the intended location at 4424 Mississippi Ave .Its our combined hope EAST and WEST that the PDX studio will occur during our project w/5 x 5 in DC , and that a dialog gets going btwn the two studios . FEBRUARY 21st HFA meets w/THEARC in DC

Ecoartspace curator , AMY LIPTON and artists from the HFA project met with THEARC to discuss the pending HFA project in DC and a variety of interaction by groups allied with the ARC. A compelling statement was given by AIDAN DRAPER who is the son of HFA founder and artist SIMON DRAPER about his involvement with the project over the past couple of years .The project hopes to have a range of participants including childrens groups that work with the ARC . The final location of the initial Studio was decided on which will result in a more visible prescence at the ARC . THEARC is located at 1901 Mississippi Ave SE in DC .Artist , CHERE KRAVOSKY discussed her HFA project with the group and her wish to perhaps collect 5 questions which would be posed to President Obama . Her performance piece will take place around a constructed kitchen table which will propigate a variety of dialogs with passer bys and invited groups during Ms Karvosky's residemcy at the HFA studio .Her piece and dialog will start Monday March 26th . Preceding this event the ARC is hosting a TED TALK with the PINK LINE PROJECT's chief contrarian PHILIPA HUGHES on March 24th . More details soon ....

HFA in DC with the 5 x 5 Project

HFA is happy to be a participant in the 5 x 5 Public Art Fund Project in Washington DC this Spring . ECOARTSPACE curator Amy Lipton has put together 5 art projects of which HFA is one.The HFA project will be hosted by THEARC located at 1901 Mississippi Ave SE in Anacostia .Our install date is March 20th and we will be joined by a variety of groups associated with the ARC in the building of our signature 6 x 6 Studio that day . The project runs for 6 weeks and we hope to have various artists working with a range of collaborators during this period . It is our hope to leave a studio with the ARC to use as they wish . The artists who will be in residence at the ARC include Michael Asbill , Chere Kravosky , Jessica Poser , Michael Natiello , Matthew B Slaats , Todd Sargood and Simon Draper . We will be posting a schedule soon .

SOME RECENT THOUGHTS and IDEAS

Winter is always a good time for deliberation and this year with a few good snow days already under our belts , thoughts and ideas have been prevalent . So in between the dig outs and the de icings we've been digging up some thoughts and scrapping off a few old plans of an HFA kind .

We've been wanting to start to move in a new direction for some time now especially with our various electronic feeds . FB has been steady , the HFA .org blog got some good play time with Michael Montella posting regularly and some cool stuff of a video kind , but the old original here has been wanting ....

So over the next few weeks we're going to start to turn the site over to some new writers ,and bloggers and let them post current articles ,and items of interest to artists and that elusive other audience from the region .... then start going further afar . Even to the WEST coast !!

Menawhile bear with us as we still post our ramblings from up the river and in and around Philipse Brooke , and await the February thaw .... (you think?) .

THE TEMPORARY PROJECT SPACE

Alot has been happening in the world of HFA . We finished the indoor project at ROOS ARTS in Rosendale NY , packed most of the studios away at various locations including Stowe VT and now we have a NEW indoor project at a NEW location in Peekskill NY .We started with a mix of material and built a recycled studio at THE TEMPORARY PROJECT SPACE mid January and invited almost 30 artists to come by and make stuff .... along the lines of the Studio Recycled.

In between the snow storms and ice rain we've managed to get some works going with artists form Peekskill , Cold Spring , Garrison , Beacon and Rosendale . Part of the appeal is having a space we can show up almost any time and work together , outside of our normal or usual practice . Many of the artists got alot out of the working experience in Rosendale and we felt compelled to do it again .

THE TEMPORARY PROJECT SPACE is what ? Its a small , former store front used by a local T shirt business which moved out at the end of last year , in the small industrial area of Peekskill

off Rte 6 heading north . Throw a stone you might hit the HVCCA building ...more likely the RV place or that other fence company ....

Seriously its the Project Spaces intent to show a variety of groups work which dont always get air time at usual art venues .. such as Matthew Slaats PAUSE /Poughkeepsie project , Amy Lipton and ecoartspaceNY and a few others ...including HFA .

Its current location is 1215 Park St Peekskill NY stop by we're OPEN Saturdays Noon to 5pm

JUNE Residencies start at HHLT , NY

We're hoping to get the studios rolling end of May at the Hudson Highland Land Trust in Philipstown NY . WE're kicking off with a local childrens group the "River of Words " led by Irene O Garden and Lisa Mechaley . The children will get a chance to help build the studio and will also create new tiles for its exterior re-purposing other material , continuing our theme of Recycling the Studio .

We have 12 artists scheduled to begin short term residencies at this site , once we have installed our small quadrangle of studios behind the HHLTs offices ... The artists are predominantly from the area as we want to minimize our travel foot print .. others will be taking the train which is close by .

Chris Kennedy and the School for the Future will be doing a work shop in June , and HFA will be making an exchange at the Schools project site in Bushwick NY in July . Dates to be confirmed .

HFA ARTISTS show works at RANK Realty

Six artists in the Cold Spring area showed work at the new offices of RANK Realty . All the artists have worked with the HFA project over the past three years , and more to join as Art gets seen at Work . Current exhibitors include Richard Bruce , Kathy Feighery , Marnie Hillsley Grey Zeien, Simon Draper , Michael Natiello . Hudson Valley artists Tom Sarrantonio , Jeanne Englert and Carol Flaitz are also showing work at the new offices . RECYCLED DRAWINGS go to ROOS ARTS

Roos Arts Rosendale NY will be showing the RECYCLED Drawings from Chashama 112 exhibit in NYC , which closed yesterday . The HYBRID Recycled Studio will be going forward to be the first studio at Hudson Highland Land Trust Garrison NY with the River of Words Group ..more on that soon . The Recycled Drawings will be part of a benefit to bring a studio to Rosendale in July as part of the art celebrations end of that month .

RECYCLING the STUDIO opened on Friday March 26th , Twenty artists who have worked with the project since it began in 2008 up to this year . Some of the artwork directly comes from the artists working with the project or are examples of how it has changed their working method , others are of their "normal" working practice .....ALL inclusive methods !
